Felipe Alberto Sanchez

Felipe Alberto Sanchez, the eldest of three children, grew up in an underserved community of Los Angeles.  Despite challenges growing up, Felipe became one of the few students in his high school to move onto higher education.  Felipe received a B.A degree in Business Economics with a minor in accounting from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2003.  While a student at UCLA he dedicated much of his time tutoring disadvantaged college students in Physics as part of the Academic Advancement Program.  He was dedicated to teaching and helping his students develop study skills that they lacked coming from sub par high schools.

Although Felipe developed a true appreciation of many subjects while he was in college ranging from Business to Physics, his involvement in community service projects led him to desire a future in medicine.  He was part of Chicanos for Community Medicine and was a regular volunteer at several health fairs offering free medical care to underserved communities in Los Angeles County.  Felipe was a regular volunteer at the emergency room in Martin Luther King/ Drew Hospital where he witnessed both the rewards and difficulties in providing healthcare.  Both his interactions with patients and his understanding of health care strongly motivated him to enter medicine.  Felipe is now currently a medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

As a medical student, Felipe continues with his involvement in community service and mentoring disadvantaged students.  He continues to be a regular volunteer at health fairs and is an active member of Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) where he was the Mentorship Coordinator and Treasurer.  Felipe is a committee member for admissions to the UCLA Pre-medical Enrichment Program (PREP) that helps prepares undergraduates for a future in medicine.  Felipe also hopes to increase the number of minority physicians by serving as a member of the admission committee for disadvantaged applicants to the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.  Felipe is currently finishing his MD degree and will be pursuing a combined MD/MBA degree.  Felipe hopes to use his studies in the future to develop ways to improve the health and the access to healthcare of underserved communities.
