W. Whitfield Neill, M.Arch.
Mr. Neill was born and raised in New Orleans. In 1980 he received B.A. degree from Emory University, with a double major in Art History and Psychology. Finding limited options for employment in those fields without a post graduate degree, he took a job in the Employee Relations Dept. of Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. After two and half years at the hospital, Mr. Neill decided to pursue a career in architecture. He enrolled in Tulane University’s School of Architecture, and in 1986 received a B.Arch. (In 2004, Tulane retroactively changed this degree to a M.Arch., which was done in conjunction with restructuring their degree requirements for the architecture school.)
Following graduation from Tulane, Mr. Neill worked for eight years in conventional architectural practice: two and a half in New Orleans, two and a half in Beaufort, SC (where he first became a licensed architect), and another three back in New Orleans, working for three different firms along the way. In addition to his South Carolina license he also holds architectural licenses in Louisiana and New Jersey. During the years in New Orleans, Mr. Neill taught design part time at the Tulane School of Architecture, and over the years has served as a visiting critic on design reviews for studios led by other design faculty members at the School.
Finding the long hours and low pay of practicing architecture kept him from spending time with his two young children and having sufficient income to provide for their needs. Mr. Neill changed career directions again. In 1994, he took a position as an in-house architectural consultant to the Commercial Real Estate lenders at Hibernia National Bank, and he is presently still working in this capacity for the Bank. Among his community service efforts, Mr. Neill has participated in fund raising events for Children’s Hospital, has taught in a New Orleans YMCA adult literacy program, has helped organize and run fund raising events for his children’s schools, and provides ongoing support to Hibernia’s Community Development Department.
