The Institute of Community Development (ICD) grew out of desire to contribute to a “new” and progressive South. After witnessing first hand many of the age old problems that plague the South yet finding very few organizations that actually addressed a totality of these issues, ICD was born.
ICD is a privately funded, nonpartisan, 501(c) 3, nonprofit organization that provides leadership, education, and advocacy to empower America's diverse rural, mid-sized and large cities in order to revitalize their communities. Our mission is to be an economic and social capital advocate for underserved communities and a catalyst to increase community capacity in order to facilitate neighborhood development, business development, healthcare and educational solutions.
The concept of an institute of community development is not new. In fact, there are community development corporations (CDC) in almost every State. However, most CDC's primary goal is affordable housing without addressing the totality of issues that plague a community. Affordable housing without capacity development, educational opportunities, or access to healthcare only address immediate needs without addressing long term solutions. The aforementioned has confirmed the need for an entity that aims to address a totality of community issues as a means to an improved quality of life for citizens.
Through education, capacity building, access to health care, and community development, we strive to enhance the quality of life of underserved populations. |
